What's happening in Japan

 Some of the questions people may be thinking about about what is happening on the ground

What aid physically has been rendered

Asked JAG to send a brief report of items purchased w/ first wire (1/3 baby food, formula; 1/3 water & food; 1/3 heating fuel) and where distributed.  Awaiting repot

What is in progress

In-country purchase:

Dialogued with CRASH last night on needs list based on their team assessments.  Noted that we will wire upon receipt of their planned appropriation of funds to purchase an assortment of the following per their assessment:

* Rice, canned items, energy bars, and retort-pouch food
* Baby diapers, baby formula, baby food
* Menstrual pads, wet wipes
* male & female undergarments, socks
* Hygiene items: soaps, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.

Bob Boucek from Feed The Hungry and CRASH are trying to source large quantity of rice to purchase in country, possibly out of Kobe.

- Containerized shipment:

Barring surprise information, it seems that the importation of rice/soy meals will be a no-go.  Govt. of Japan is VERY particular when it comes to rice imported into Japan. The rice that they grow & eat is short grain; the rice in our meal packs is long grain. All indications we have received is that Customs has not/will not be lenient to imported foodstuffs.We do have a container of new cookware to ship to Japan.

- How is CRASH distributions going?

They are experiencing measured success-- still challenges with sourcing supply and transportation;

- What are the present needs and what are our capabilities?

Present needs listed above; in my opinion, with the Japan Defense Force moving from rescue operations to recovery, things ought to start moving rather quickly over the next two weeks.  Unlike Haiti, the Japanese will have roads and rubble cleared within a month and temporary housing developments set up within 2-3 months for the displaced.

Our main m.o. at the moment is to continue in-country purchase of ‘needed right now’ food and non-food items for delivery to the hurting in Jesus’ name.

Please continue to pray and partner with us in Japan. Every little helps to make a difference when thousands of people  have lost everything. Help todya online by donating at www.feedthehungry.org.uk
